Kachemak Bay Shorebird Festival

Keynote Speaker Richard Crossley

After an early start at age 10, Richard became fuelled by a passion for birding and travel, and by 15 was hitchhiking across the UK in search of rarities. This was followed by backpacking and hitching journey all over the northern hemisphere. During these travels, in 1985, he came across his Utopia, a place known as Cape May, that he now calls home with his wife, Debra, and two daughters, Sophie and Samantha.

The Original Brit back then in Cape May and together with another Brit - Paul Holt - they discovered 'The Dyke' and pioneered warbler flight identification.

In 2002 Richard began working on The Shorebird Guide, published by Houghton Mifflin. The unique photographs required for this book were unavailable, and so getting these photos became Richard's mission and resulted in his love of, and obsession for, photography. Richard's father is an abstract artist and many of his visions of art can be seen in Richard's work. The revolutionary concept and beauty of this book is already changing the way people look at both birds and books.

Richard, along with his wife Debra, is also interested in the future of birding, and recently formed the Cap May Young Birders Club. Their goal is to bring together youth and the community to encourage a love of birding and the outdoors.
