Mother nature assisted the winter king salmon fishing tournament Sunday in Homer, Alaska. The weather was a respite from the blizzard type weather of the previous 2 days. The skies cleared and the wind died and provided a wonderful fishing day. The tournament was originally scheduled for Saturday but had to be postponed until Sunday because of high seas. There were 837anglers in 255 boats and these lucky anglers caught a total of 210 winter king salmon in the waters of Kachemak Bay. Total prize money awarded to the top 10 finishers was $62,925. Merchandise prizes and airline ticket drawings totaled $21,000. Boat side bet winners took home $44,118. Total cash & merchandise give always totaled $128,043.

First place winner was William( Billy) Pepper of Homer fishing on the “Anna Lane” His prize winning fish weighed 33.48 lbs. Billy won $17,619. The “Anna Lane” also won $6,187.50 in boat side bets. Captain of the boat was Johnny “Mac” McFarland. He wins the John Hillstrand Memorial Trophy, in honor of the late John Hillstrand.

There were 9 youth under 18 entered in the tournament. They had an outstanding day, catching 4 of the top 20 winning fish. Jake Blankenship of Anchorage was the youth prize winner with a 28.82 lb fish. Jake wins the youth trophy and the Bill Thompson Memorial Youth Prize of $300, established by the family of the late Bill Thompson of Kenai. Other youth winners were Matt Fogg of Anchor Point in 10th place, with a 26.72 lb fish; Jasmine Gilpin of Wasilla with a 26.3 lb fish; and Garrett Olson of Wasilla with a 24.52 lb salmon.

The boat side bets totaled $44,118.75 and were won by the boats the “Pole Bender”, the “Katidid”, the “Paloma Rose”, the “Linda D”, the “Anna Lane” and the ”Sorceress”.
