Ninilchik angler wins the Homer Winter King Salmon
Tournament
The 15th Annual Winter King Tournament was held
on Sunday, March 23, 2008, postponed one day due to
poor weather conditions. Sunday proved to be a great
day on Kachemak Bay for 793 angles and 236 boats,
especially for John Forster of Ninilchik, who landed
the biggest salmon while fishing on the "Blood
Vessel". John's fish weighed in at 34 pounds,
winning $16,653 in cash. Blood Vessel Captain George
Veney of Ninilchik was awarded the John Hillstrand
Memorial Trophy, in honor of the late
John Hillstrand.
The winner of the Youth prize went to Layton Van
Lier of Soldotna with a 17.4 lb fish. Layton wins
the youth trophy and the Bill Thompson Memorial
Youth Prize of $300, established by the family of
the late Bill Thompson of Kenai.
Boat side bet winners took home $47,733,
including this year's new SKUNK side bet. Total
amount is $8,269 more than last year's total side
bet payout
Total prize payout awarded to the top 10
finishers was $59,475.
Total cash payout this year was $107,250 and was
the 4th largest in tournament history.
