  • Alyeska Tire & Auto Service

Jerry and George reminisce about the good old days at the 25th anniversary celebration in 2003.

Alyeska Tire and Auto began in May of 1978 as Alyeska Sales and Service. It was initiated by two young entrepreneurs, George Navarre and Jerry Wortham. Believe it or not, Alyeska Tire and Auto began as a used car dealership and auto parts store. As the story is told, George and Jerry were pestered by a Harry Odum, Alaska's Goodyear representative, to stock tires. In order to convince Harry that the venture would not work and to "get him to simply shut-up" they reluctantly agreed to Harry's request. As you may have guessed, the tire part of the business was extremely successful and over the next 8 years Jerry and George worked hard at developing Alyeska Sales and Service. In 1986 George sold his share of the business to Jerry and what started in 1978 as a used car/auto parts store had grown into one of Alaska's largest tire dealerships. Jerry has been the sole owner since 1986 and has since expanded his business to three additional locations on the peninsula. He opened the Soldotna store on the Kenai Spur in 1989, followed by the K-Beach location in 2002.  Homer was an endeavor we tackled in February of 2003 and has become one of our most successful operations to date. In August of 2006 we opened our fifth location in Fairbanks.  We are now proud to say we've opened our 6th location in January of 2013 in Palmer, Alaska!
As the years passed things changed and in 2004 Alyeska Sales and Service changed its name to Alyeska Tire and Auto to reflect its primary business activities. Alyeska Tire and Auto prides itself on being a customer orientated business. Our vision is to be the best in all aspects of our business as perceived by our customers. Our mission is to exceed our customer expectations in quality of products and service. We adhere to the belief that we can always improve upon what we do. Alyeska Tire and its employees value honesty and integrity and conduct our business in an appreciative and professional manner. We firmly believe in these ideals and you will observe that the first time you walk through our doors. Please take the time to stop by have a cup of coffee or a bag of popcorn, you won't regret it.

Cosmic Kitchen is independently owned and operated by Chef Sean Hogan, and his wife, Michelle Wilson. Opened in May 2003, we love serving great food to our loyal locals, as well as many visitors from near and far, in the most beautiful setting of Homer, Alaska. Travelers for many years, we finally found home!
We chose the name Cosmic Kitchen from our friend, Brother Asaiah, who referred to Homer as “The Cosmic Hamlet by the Sea” in his numerous letters to the local papers.
Our goal was to create a simple, fresh, healthy menu full of flavor and variety. Every day we make our fresh salsas from scratch, grill our marinated chicken, steak, and seafood, and prepare homemade sauces and soups. Our beans and rice are vegetarian, and many items are vegan or gluten free. Visit us on Facebook to see our Daily Specials and Soup du Jour.

"A fairytale cottage. Decorated with quilts designed by Pat. Mommy and baby moose wandered around the walking path behind the cottage when we were there at the end of May. Arden, the host, is a professional Santa and former radio personality. Great hot breakfast and lengthy conversation with Arden and Pat. We were given a take-along cold breakfast of ham, cheddar, homemade rolls, and molten chocolate cupcakes when we went fishing at 6:00 AM. Good value. Great memory"

  • St. Augustine's Kayak & Tours

Experience Alaska sea kayaking with a long established first class outfitter. St. Augustine's Kayak & Tours offers guided kayaking from their spectacular base camp in outer Peterson Bay in the heart of Kachemak Bay State Park. The Central location has a welth of diverse paddling routes and loops to choose from, including Gull Island bird rookery and it's 16,000 nesting birds and China Poot Bay, often touted as one of the world's riches estuaries with it's vast system of tidal channels. We offer half day, full day and overnight packages.
Our base camp is an Alaskan camping experience in comfort. The romantic private cabins are appointed with linins, wood stoves and basic cooking equipment. In addition, there is a common area with a fire pit, BBQ, and sheltered outdoor kitchen and deck. The individual cabins and general camp area offers nice views over the water and an overall romantic atmosphere. This is a great way to be included in the experience rather than look at it from afar in a hotel room on the other side of the bay in Homer. Recommended to folks attracted to a more authentic and rustic Alaskan experience.

    1. Includes a night in our base camp cabins, breakfast, round trip water taxi, and guided full day of kayaking. 4 PM departure or 6 PM option. $235 per person.
    2. Includes # 1 package with a sond night in camp with a continental breakfast, and morning return to Homer. $320 per person.
    3. Includes # 1 and # 2 packages with an alternative drop off in Kachemak Bay State Park to do an independent hink on the Glacier Trail with the return to Homer late afternoon or early evening. $395 per person.

My name is Carole Hamik, and my husband and I came up the Alcan Highway 32 years ago. We had heard that Homer was the Shangri-la of Alaska and surely it did turn out to be so much more. Jack taught high school math in Sand Point and then we moved to Homer to raise our 2 daughters. He also commercially fished for halibut in Kachemak Bay and around the Barren Islands and near Kodiak Island. He has taken f/v Whalesong to Sand Point from Homer for 23 fishing seasons to gill net for red salmon and ling cod. Sand Point is 600 miles west of Homer, near the Alaska Peninsula and it is also a very beautiful place. Homer has been our happy little home all this time and I enjoy sharing the most enjoyable aspects of it to our delighted guests.

Bay Welding of Homer, Alaska, is located on beautiful Kachemak Bay with access to the Cook Inlet and Gulf of Alaska
Serving Alaska for 37 years, Bay Welding’s focus is the construction of custom aluminum boats for State and Government agencies, commercial fishermen, charter operators, and private users.  Bay Welding has built to specification 79 custom vessels in the last 15 years, 28 of which are 30 feet or longer. Founded as a local metal repair and fabrication firm for the commercial fishing fleet, Bay Welding has evolved into one of the Northwest’s premier boat builders.

Combining three generations of commercial fishing background with the latest in fabrication and vessel design, Bay Welding’s innovation and dedication to detail have kept them at the forefront of Alaska’s custom boat builders despite difficult economies and increasing competition.  Bay Welding’s stellar reputation amongst commercial fishermen statewide is testament to the strength, integrity, and functionality of its vessels.  In 2003, 2009, and 2010 Bay Welding won contracts to construct patrol vessels for the State of Alaska.  All three vessels have been met with rave reviews by the State, and have quickly become the favorite of those officers operating them in the field.  Family owned and operated, Bay Welding designs and completes all aspects of vessel construction in house, a process which ensures premium quality and detail-oriented craftsmanship.  Bay Welding hires locally, buys locally, and takes great pride in their product.

Oysters thrive in the salt water of Alaska's coastline because the water is so cold.  Alaskan oysters don't reproduce in waters this cold, which makes for a high-quality half shell oyster with sweet, plump meat the consumer enjoys. These suspended oysters can feed continually on plankton in the water and avoid exposure to hot summer suns, cold winter winds, mud and sand. As a result of this coddled life, Alaskan oysters are uniformly shaped with deep cups and plump meats -- perfect for serving on the half shell. Alaskan oysters are among the safest oysters in the marketplace, especially compared with other regions that operate under harvest limitations because of public health concerns. The reason may be the cold and pristine Alaskan waters.  Alaskan oysters are harvested from waters that rarely exceed 50°F.
