Weather and Cancellation

The Winter King Salmon Tournament Committee met today and decided that the ice conditions in the Homer Harbor will NOT cause the postponement of the Tournament on March 17th. Of course, the Winter King Salmon Tournament Committee Members make the final determination regarding tournament cancellation/postponement based on conditions on Saturday (wind, below 10 degrees temperature). Due to the fluctuations of weather and the concern for safety of every boat, this job is taken quite seriously. The decision is based on safety of all participants. It is the desire of the committee that the crew on smaller boats are given equal opportunity to enjoy this tournament. Determination is aided by reports from the National Weather Service, consultations with both the United States Coast Guard as well as the Homer Port & Harbor. However, each participant must realize the value of their own judgment, know his or her own personal limitations and make their own determination. It is your responsibility to protect yourself.

Safe Boating

The U.S. Coast Guard's Boating Safety Division (CG-5422) is dedicated to reducing loss of life, injuries, and property damage that occur on U.S. waterways by improving the knowledge, skills, and abilities of recreational boaters. Safety is every boater’s number one priority. Visit the USCG website at http://www.uscgboating.org/. There you will find all of the information you need to ensure your boating experience is safe and enjoyable.

The state of Alaska boat requirements are available online at http://dnr.alaska.gov/parks/boating/pdf/boatrequire.pdf

Alaska's boating opportunities are as superlative as they are diverse. We certainly use boats to enjoy our world-class outdoor recreation resources, but our residents also use boats as an important means of transportation, and to support subsistence. Alaskans are truly "lifestyle" boaters.

Unfortunately, we also have one of the highest non-commercial boating fatality rates in the nation. In Alaska drowning is the second leading cause of accidental death. Accident statistics reveal that 3 out of 4 boating fatalities were the result of capsizing or falling overboard into cold water, where the boater was not wearing a life jacket. Most had not taken a single boating safety course.
