The Homer Chamber of Commerce 17th Annual Winter
King Salmon Tournament will be a massive event with
massive prizes thanks to the many years of support
from anglers and business sponsors. As a result of
this growth, the committee has continued to add new
measures to help ensure the longevity of the
tournament, AND KEEP IT FUN FOR ALL!
what you need to know about the
2010 tournament
Fave Side Bet: Skunk Bet of $50 is a bet
that your boat won’t get skunked. You win if your
boat catches a fish. You lose if your boat does not
catch a fish. Winning boats share the pot. All legal
king salmon are eligible but must be brought to
weigh in.
Daylight Savings Time: Daylight savings
time will go into effect almost two weeks
prior to the tournament. This has caused it to be
dangerously dark in the morning the day of the
tournament. Sunrise is at approximately 8 AM.
To provide safer fishing conditions, “lines-in” for
the tournament will be at 9 AM. Thanks for your
understanding. Safety first.
Boundaries: The boundaries are the same
this year. The North boundary is the Coast Guard
marker light at Anchor point extending offshore on a
line at 59°46’113” north to the west boundary at
152°00’00” West which runs south to a line at
59°25’00” North which runs east to point south of
Point Pogibshi.
Awarding of Prizes: Top 20 unofficial
results will be announced immediately following
weigh-in at the awards party. Boat side bets will be
announced later that night at the Duggan’s Pub after
all tallying has been finalized, which could take
some time. Prize payouts will not be awarded at the
tournament, but will be awarded instead after
results have been reviewed and finalized by the
committee. IRS regulations require gambling winnings
to be reported by the Chamber of Commerce.
Individuals may be taxed on their winnings.
Fishing Rules Enforcement: Given the size
of the tournament, we have to rely on YOU, the
anglers, to use the honor system and self-police
each other. If you see someone doing something
questionable, ask them about it. If it appears they
are breaking ADF&G or Coast Guard rules, contact the
state enforcement office at 235-8239. The dispatcher
will immediately contact the troopers on the water.
The Alaska State Troopers Patrol Boat will be on the
water all day, but the fishing area is big, so the
committee needs to rely on you all to help us keep
this a clean and fun tournament.
Fish and Game Regulations: LICENSE AND
KING STAMP - If you are 16 or older, you must
have a 2010 sport fishing license or an Alaska
Department of Fish and Game permanent ID (PID) card.
You must have a king salmon stamp if you are an
Alaska resident between the ages of 16 and 59 or you
are a non-resident 16 or older.
ANNUAL LIMIT, HARVEST RECORDING REQUIREMENT
- North of the latitude of Bluff Point the annual
limit for king salmon 20 inches or larger is five.
The date and location of harvest of kings over 20
inches must be recorded on the back of your sport
fishing license immediately upon harvesting. If you
are under 16 or have an ADF&G PID you must have
it in
your possession
and record your king harvest on a harvest record
card available free at license vendors and ADFG
office.
South of the latitude of Bluff Point the seasonal
limit and recording requirement for kings 20 inches
and over doesn’t go into effect until April 1 (so
you don’t have to record your kings taken from this
area).
BAG AND POSSESSION LIMITS - North of the
latitude of Bluff Point (59° 40’ N) the daily bag
and possession limits are one king per day. South of
the latitude of Bluff Point the daily bag and
possession limits for kings are two per day.
If you harvest a king salmon south of the
latitude of Bluff Point, you may not keep a king
salmon caught north of the latitude of Bluff Point
but you may catch and release king salmon north of
the latitude of Bluff Point.
If you harvest two kings south of Bluff Point you
may not fish north of Bluff Point.
If you intend to release a king salmon 20 inches
or longer you may not remove it from the water. A
king salmon 20 inches or longer, removed from the
water must be retained and becomes part of the bag
limit of the person originally hooking it.
This is not a comprehensive list of the sport
fishing regulations and you are responsible for
familiarizing yourself with the sport fishing
regulations for the waters you intend to fish -
consult the 2010 Southcentral Sport Fishing
Regulations Summary for a complete listing of the
sport fishing regulations pertaining to this area.
The 2010 Sport Fishing Regulations Summary will be
available in mid-April.
